Everyone learns in different ways. Some like a structured approach, where you’re guided step-by-step on the best way to learn your instrument. Some like the variety of free-form exploration, picking lessons that appeal to you the most. Both are totally valid ways to learn your instrument, so Melodics gives you free rein to actively learn how you learn best.

Both learning approaches are easily found in the app in the Guided and Explore sections. In the Guided section, you’ll have access to a structured, linear approach to musical development. In the Explore section, you’ll find an open, self-directed learning experience.

The Guided Path and Courses.

Have you ever asked yourself, “what should I practice? How do I know which lesson to play next?” Particularly when starting out, it’s hard to know what you don’t know. Because of this, many beginning musicians will benefit from starting with a more structured approach to learning – particularly the Guided Path – but also more experienced musicians with developed tastes and confidence take their skills to the next level here, and through doing Courses.

Path

Take the guesswork out of your development and let us guide you. The Path is your starting point to establishing a foundation of fundamental skills every musician should have.

Here you’ll find a linear series of courses, each with a single learning outcome in mind. You can start at the beginning, or anywhere you choose: the Path covers the basics, and traverses into intermediate, and ultimately advanced topics one-by-one.

Courses

Add structure to your learning with Courses. Focus on learning really specific music concepts, styles and skills in a highly structured way.

Courses are bundled catalogs, each providing a progressive deep-dive within a defined subject. Here you can learn more about more niche topics such as specific musical themes, artist & playing styles, or more advanced theory concepts.

Explore Lessons, Scales & Chords, and Songs.

Want to forge your own path? Then the Explore section is for you. As musical taste and experiences develop, or for those who have a clear, specific goal in mind, here you can explore thousands of Lessons, Scales & Chords, and Songs where you can apply and foster your established skills in a focused way.

Lessons

Find specific lessons to your taste. Narrow down your search results by filtering Lessons by genre, tag, and grade.

The purpose of lessons is to learn more about and develop a specific technique or skill, and broaden your understanding of its function in a variety of different musical situations — such as how they’re applied in other genres, by artists, using different instrument sounds, or at more challenging difficulty levels.

Scales & Chords

Get your reps in! Tone your muscle memory through repetition of scales and chords.

Scales & Chords are really useful for reinforcing specific beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert techniques or skills, and developing muscle-memory through repetition. They’re also a great way to limber up and stretch in preparation for a practice session.

Songs

Breakdown how to play famous songs from your favourite artists. (Available on the Premium Melodics Plan.)

Learning how to play a favourite song is an important part of every musician's development. Rather than learning new skills or concepts, learning to play a familiar song shows you how you can apply all of your accumulated musical skills and abilities in a recognisable, real-world context. This is a great benchmark of your progress to-date!

Your guide for when to move on.

Guided or Explore. Which one is right for you? The answer is probably both! We encourage enjoying the benefits of both sections. Flow between exploration and following a more structured path to best reflect the specific stage of your musical journey, your immediate goals, and your rate of progress.

The Guided section is a great place to establish your core skill-set. No matter whether you’re beginner or advanced, you’ll always be somewhere along this journey. But when you feel more confident in where you’re at and less reliant on the Guided approach, it’s a good sign it might be time to hit pause on the Path. Head off and scout out for a bit on your own in pursuit of expanding your musical knowledge and interests!

The Explore section is where you can choose to delve into specific interests and objectives to elaborate upon what you learned from the path, in a more self-directed way. This is where you put those newly established skills into action in multiple different contexts such as by exploring challenging new lessons, honing muscle-memory in Scales & Chords, or putting your skills to test in the real world by learning to play a new song with them!

But by the same token, when your exploration feels like it has been successful, you may find returning back to a more structured learning approach in the Guided section where you’ll find the next level of musical skill and knowledge to strive for. If in doubt, the Guided Path is your home base, always ready for you to return to exactly from where you left off and develop more advanced abilities before exploring once again.
